Epistemic Injustices

The concept of epistemic injustice has been a focus of interest in contemporary philosophical discussions. The conceptualization of epistemic injustice echoes the need to erase the apparent boundaries between epistemology and other areas of philosophy. This dialogue highlighted the connections between epistemic relations and other kinds of social interaction. It helped us understand that the participation of certain groups in the production of knowledge and the configuration of its evaluation standards is vulnerable to marginalization by agential and structural powers. The way in which these power relations are shaped leads, in turn, to more generalized oppression and discrimination towards these groups. While Miranda Fricker identified two kinds of epistemic injustice – Testimonial Injustice and Hermeneutic Injustice – recent philosophical approaches have accounted for other varieties of epistemic injustice that are not aligned with that initial distinction. The contributions in this thematic issue will be oriented to the philosophical analysis of the different ways in which epistemic injustices (in plural) are conceived and perpetrated.
Estudios de Filosofía is the name of the journal published by the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Antioquia. The journal accepts papers in Spanish and English.

El concepto de injusticia epistémica ha sido foco de interés en las discusiones filosóficas contemporáneas. Al hacer eco de la necesidad de borrar las aparentes líneas fronterizas entre la epistemología y otras áreas de la filosofía, la conceptualización de la injusticia epistémica ha permitido evidenciar la manera en que las relaciones epistémicas entre agentes están profundamente entrelazadas con sus formas de interacción social. Así, entendemos que la participación de ciertos grupos tanto en los procesos de producción de conocimiento como en la configuración de sus estándares de evaluación es vulnerable a marginación por parte de poderes agenciales y estructurales, lo cual se traduce en formas de opresión y discriminación hacia esos grupos. Si bien la filósofa británica Miranda Fricker identificó en principio dos formas de injusticia epistémica —la injusticia testimonial y la injusticia hermenéutica— recientes aproximaciones filosóficas han dado cuenta de otras variedades de injusticia epistémica que no se identifican con esta distinción inicial. Las contribuciones en este número temático estarán orientadas al análisis filosófico sobre las distintas maneras en que se conciben y perpetran las injusticias epistémicas (en plural).
Estudios de Filosofía es la revista editada por el Instituto de Filosofía de la Universidad de Antioquia. La revista acepta artículos en español e inglés.
