New Documentary about Anna Stubblefield, Derrick Johnson, Sexual Assault, and Facilitated Communication

I want to let readers/listeners of BIOPOLITICAL PHILOSOPHY know that there is a new Netflix documentary, entitled “Tell Them You Love Me,” about the circumstances leading up to the arrest of philosopher Anna Stubblefield for the sexual assault of Derrick Johnson, a disabled Black man; Stubblefield’s trial and conviction; and the aftermath of these events. Content Warnings for sexual abuse, ableism, racism.

Directed by Nick August-Perna, the film includes interviews with Stubblefield; Derrick Johnson’s mother and brother; Stubblefield’s mother; disabled theorists; and proponents and critics of facilitated communication, the controversial practice and methodology at the centre of some of the debates around the relationship between Stubblefield and D. Johnson. The film also addresses contested ideas about sexuality and non-speaking people; disabled people and independence; intelligence; racism; coercion; and control.
