This week, BIOPOLITICAL PHILOSOPHY is very pleased to bring you a symposium on Robert Chapman’s new book, Empire of Normality: Neurodiversity and Capitalism, which was published by Pluto Press in November 2023. Immediately upon its publication, the book began to generate lively discussions on social media and has already been the subject of numerous reviews and essays in a variety of publications (including here and here). This symposium on Chapman’s book–that is, BIOPOLITICAL PHILOSOPHY’s symposium over the next week–promises to raise the bar with respect to critical analysis of Chapman’s pathbreaking book.
In a show of solidarity with this symposium, Pluto Press will take 30% off the purchase of paperback copies of the book and ebooks until the end of the calendar year. To get this discount on Empire of Normality, use the discount code BIOPHIL30 at plutobooks.com — the Pluto Press website.
The schedule and format of the symposium is as follows. On each day of this week, from today until Thursday of the week, I will post (in alphabetical order) a critical commentary on Chapman’s book: on Monday, I will post a commentary on the book by Mich Ciurria; on Tuesday, I will post a commentary by Jane Dryden; on Wednesday, a commentary by Johnathan Flowers; and on Thursday, a commentary on the book by Sofia Jeppsson. Then, on Friday, I will post a response to these commentaries from Robert Chapman themself.
After each commentary has been published on BIOPOLITICAL PHILOSOPHY, it will be accessible to you in these ways: by clicking on the respective title of its post on BIOPOLITICAL PHILOSOPHY’s home page and wherever you get the post on social media; or by clicking on its respective title below in this post. Thank you in advance to Mich, Jane, Johnathan, Sofia, and Robert for their thought-provoking and challenging contributions to the symposium!
