Call for Papers on “Disease, illness, sickness: philosophical perspectives”

“In the area of “medical humanities.” the notions of disease, illness and sickness refer, respectively, to biological, experiential and social aspects of the disease (Aho & Aho 2008). This shows the relevance of this phenomenon, the multiplicity of perspectives under which it can be studied and the richness of its meaning. In recent years, numerous philosophical works have appeared dealing with problems like corporality, vulnerability, pain, suffering, death, relationship between psyche and soma, medical encounter, medical ethics, epistemic injustices, care, healing, the technology, among many others, and these in context of both somatic and mental illness. With this in mind, Issue 70 of Estudios de Filosofia, guest-edited by Research Network on Naturalized Phenomenology, Hermeneutics, and Theories of Illness seeks to collect original articles on the problem, which will broaden the philosophical understanding of the phenomenon and enrich the dialogue between the humanities and medical sciences. The scope of posible topics comprehends, but is not limited to, the following lines of work: 1) Personal identity, transformative experience, and narrative. 2) Ontologies of illness and the meaning of medical practice. 3) Illness and disability. 4) Methodological perspectives on the study of illness. 5) Quality of life and patient care. 6) Death, the meaning of life and palliative care. 7) The logic of medical encounter, second person relationship, and empathy. 8) Ethics and responsibility in research and in medical encounters. 9) Technology and human enhancement in medical practice. 10) Pathologization of the Life-World.
